I actually had more sympathy for Denna in this book than the first one. Kvothe got me thinking when he asked Elodin what he thought about people who are always changing their name. Kvothe did not care for his response, but I did. She now seems to me more of a "lost soul" who doesn't really know who she is, finds it hard to trust anyone, and keeps trying to "reinvent" herself. I'm still not sure how many men she actually has sex with. Possibly only her Patron. I really want to know who Denna's Patron is! One thing that drives me crazy is when Kvothe meets someone and "there is a familiarity" about that person that he can't put a finger on. Honestly, I want to know!! Sometimes Kvothe remembers - and sometimes he doesn't and the story moves on. I always wonder if that person or "feeling" will be revisited later on - and will I remember the original scene?
I am continually impressed with this author's use of language. He has not only "developed" these different languages that people speak in the book, but he also explains how the different languages are constructed. He has amazing creativity. I loved the "hand language" that Kvothe learned from the Adem. I felt sorry for Tempi once they got to Haert though. He seemed to get tossed aside, and I really liked him.
The part of the story I found myself least interested in was Kvothe's time with Felurian. Obviously, this experience was a building block to Kvothe's life story, and it explains the shaed, but I was really wanted him to just leave! This part of the story also introduced us to the Cthaeh, which is referred to multiple times afterward. I like it when Kvothe is either at the University - or traveling. I liked reading about his stay with the Maer, even though that ended badly is some respects.
So, what is up with Bast at the end? I can't believe that he would betray Kvothe. (But then again, I still find it hard to accept that Snape killed Dumbledore!) And why did the Chronicler go to Bast privately? Not sure what is going on there. Also, why is Kvothe a "man waiting to die"? And yes, what the heck is in the trunk - and why can't Kvothe open it even though he has the keys? Does it have anything to do with what is in the Maer's wife's box? And most importantly: How on earth is Patrick Rothfuss going to finish this story in one more book???? I couldn't even comfortably read this book in bed because it was too heavy!
So, we are officially done with Day Two. Waiting for Day Three.... Maybe when I am retired I will read the entire Trilogy from start to finish. I'm sure I have missed and/or forgotten a lot between books! Love the story though - and Kvothe! :)
