50 Shades Darker & 50 Shades Freed by E L James

As I said earlier, this isn't my kind of trilogy.  I thought Darker was better than Grey, and I definitely thought Freed was better than Darker.  The author becomes a tad less repetitive as she moves through the books.  Some of the phrases like "inner goddess", "foil packet", "eye-rolling", "biting her lower lip" were extremely annoying to me.  In Freed, Ana refers to Christian as "Mr. Mercurial" about 12 times too many, and some of her sexual terms seem so juvenile at times " he touched me there" and "he touched my sex", etc.  Honestly, they aren't in High School! But, it was a relief that she let some of those other phrases rest in peace.  Considering the three novels, my favorite part of the trilogy started towards the end of Freed - I guess around the time that Ray is involved in the car accident.  The story finally seems to pick up then with his accident, Hyde's abduction of Mia, Ana's pregnancy, Christian FINALLY spilling his guts.  I was okay with reading about Christian's first Christmas, but I really didn't need to have Christian's perspective on Ana's interview with him.  I think after reading about Christian for roughly 1600 pages, I didn't need him "spelled out to me".  The author acts like she is writing for a teenage reader - and then adds these completely adult-only sex scenes.  It's just a really weird read.

I think I mentioned this before, but since it still bothers me I will say it again!  Why does everyone in the book have to be "beautiful"?  Seriously, who only meets physically beautiful people - where every woman is drop-dead gorgeous and every man is so attractive that he has even the Christian-smitten Ana gawking at him.  And all these beautiful people meet and match and everyone lives happily ever after:  Christian & Ana, Ellliot & Kate, Ethan & Mia, Mrs. Jones & Taylor, Grace & Carrick.  Honestly.  (Cue "stick finger down throat").  I need some realism in my books!

So, what did I like?  Well, at some point I started to like Christian.  Or should I say Mr. Mercurial?  ;)  I wouldn't want him for myself, but I liked that he started to get a clue.  I liked that Ana stuck to her guns about being independent.  I liked that Christian & Ana's relationship evolved over time - for the better.  So, there was some character development.

I have always wanted to write a novel, but when I read a really good book, I always come to the conclusion: "No, I could never write a book".  After reading this trilogy I thought: "Yes, I could write a book". :0)

It's good to read what "everyone else" is reading though, so you know what people are talking about.  And this trilogy is very much talked about!

Laters baby!
