Game of Thrones - A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

Wow!  What a fabulously written story.  I am crushed that one of my favorite characters had to die - when so many of the evil ones live on to terrorize another day. :(  There are an amazing amount of characters - and histories - and hard to pronounce names - but I am enthralled by this story.  Catelyn is such a strong woman, despite all that has happened to her.  I was worried after Bran's "fall", but she rebounded a stronger person.  (I just wish she didn't hate Jon so much.  He doesn't deserve it.)  Speaking of Jon, are we ever going to find out who his mother was??  I really want to know!  I know there were rumors about who she was and how she died, etc. but since rumors abound in this book - in all the different lands of the "Houses" - I really wanted to find out from Ned himself.

I love all the strong female characters.  Other than Catelyn, I admire little Arya (what a fighter!) and oddly enough, Daenerys, who is making quite a name for herself as the sole remaining Targaryen.  I despise the Queen (Cersei) and am definitely not fond of Catelyn's sister, Lysa, but you have to admit that they are also fiercely determined women.  I love books that recognize that women are just as strong and intelligent as men.

The entire book I had mixed feelings about where I wanted Jon to be.  Every decision he made I thought, "yes, that is probably what he should do", but when he changed his mind, I changed my mind!  Jon is one of my favorite male characters.  Ultimately, I am glad that he decided to stay on the Wall, because he will be a great leader and they will need a great leader to fight the greatest evil of all: whatever lurks beyond the wall.  Winter is Coming!  I don't think the Lannisters have anything on what's coming to the Seven Kingdoms.  It would be great if none of the Lannisters even survived until then - but we know that won't happen.  I hope Joffrey is killed sooner rather than later though!

I love the direwolves!  I was so incredibly sad that Lady had to die - especially since she was the gentlest of the siblings.  But, each direwolf matches the personality of his/her owner.  In this book, Sansa was definitely the "weakest link" of the Stark family - and her wolf is the only one that died.  Survival of the fittest, even though it wasn't Lady's fault. :(  I am hoping that Sansa starts showing some of her mother's strength and intelligence in the next book.  And I really don't understand what happened to Arya.  I realize that she was found by Yoren, but then what??  I can't wait to find out!

I don't know what to make of Tyrion.  Is he good? Is he bad?  Hmmmm.  Time will tell.  Then there is Littlefinger. What a traitor!  Did he know what King Joffrey was planning?  Is he still playing both sides of the fence? Someone said that he is loyal only to himself.  Well, I wish they hadn't been right about that.  I thought his love for Catelyn would sway him.  Wrong.

Two simple words sum it up:  Loved it! :-)
