So, where to start with the book.... The first thought that enters my head is how much I hate the insecurity and idiocy of Theon Greyjoy. He is arrogant and prideful and selfish and a complete idiot. That's saying a lot in this book! There are many, many people to hate, but Theon was given a home by the Starks and raised along with their sons. Yes, I realize that he was captured in war, but honestly, does he have no sense of honor? There were so many people who died, yet I was most crushed by the deaths of Maester Luwin and Ser Rodrik. I actually gave Theon the benefit of the doubt about Bran and Rickon though. I really didn't believe that he would have killed them, so I was enormously relieved when I found out they had escaped him. I feel awful for the boys he killed though. I think I feel so strongly about Theon because I really don't know who to trust out of all the other characters! Littlefinger, the Hound, Tyrion, everyone who has helped a Stark child somewhere along the way (there are quite a few people now!), they all seem to have a spark of good in them. It may be self-serving good...or not...it's too hard to tell.
My favorite character is still Arya. I have been waiting and waiting for her to make a run for it. I am so happy that she found her inner spirit again and decided to try, especially with Gendry. I have to admit that the two of them remind me a bit of Katniss and Peeta. ;) Sansa showed some spirit in this book as well, thank goodness. I know they will keep her alive as long as Jaime is alive, but is he? Catelyn seemed to have lost her patience with him when she visited him in his cell. I guess we won't know what happened there until the next book. Lots of cliffhangers in this one!
My second favorite character is Jon. I was not at all happy that he was forced to kill Qhorin, but Qhorin knew what had to be done to try to save everyone else. I was so upset at the end of book one that Ned Stark was killed, so I kept thinking that another Stark would be killed in this book. I was so relieved that all 6 children are alive, if not necessarily well, at the end of this book - and 5 of the direwolves.
This second book had a lot more mysticism in it. I remember thinking that the first book seemed like we were reading about events that actually happened a long time ago. But now we have shapeshifters, or whatever they are: the Stark boys as wolves, Jaqen H'ghar changing his appearance and flying away, Melisandre turning into black smoke (shadow) to kill people, the man who Jon killed turning into an eagle.... And then the most mystical of all, Daenerys. Not sure what to make of her experiences. All I know is, she's going to be trouble when she joins the others and fights for her crown! :)
I am completely intrigued by this story, but I realize it might not be everyone's cup of tea. ;) And if people really aren't into the books, they are a long read!
