The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

I was convinced that I would not like this book before I even started reading it. I liked it a lot more than I though I would though. I wasn't crazy about he racing info, but at the same time, I liked how the author chose to interweave the racing tidbits with the story line. I liked how Enzo and Denny were each other's "teachers". They respected each other - and they "listened" to each other. Thanks to Enzo, Denny didn't sign those awful custody papers. Denny taught Enzo patience and integrity, which Enzo incorporated into his life.

The zebra was an interesting way of expressing Enzo's feelings. I personally think Denny should have been grateful that Enzo only destroyed some stuffed animals after being left alone for three days! I like how Enzo learned to hold "the zebra" in check after that initial episode.

I had to stop myself from taking a peek at the ending. The main story line was a difficult one, and I hate how vengeful and/or naive people can change another person's life with just a few spoken words.  I was so angry when the 15 year old accused Denny of molesting her. The Grandparents were only doing what they felt was right I guess, but I was angry with them too. Oftentimes I will enjoy a book more if I know that it will turn out OK! :-) I didn't peek though; I just suffered. Think of all the grief that could have been saved if only Enzo could talk! Enzo certainly helped Denny in the end though. Actions speak louder than words, right?

I was really upset with Denny's wife not going to the doctor! What's up with that? Why would you rather die than find out what's wrong? I don't share her mentality.

I was sad that Enzo didn't live long enough to see Denny reunited with his daughter, but I'm happy that he knew there was going to be a happy ending for them. I liked how Denny met "Enzo" on the race track in Italy. Live long and prosper Enzo!
