Let Me In by John Ajivide Lindqvist

First of all, why change the title? I think the other title this book is published under is more appropriate since they refer to it in the book. ("Let the Right One In"). With that being said, so many other things bothered me to distraction.

Why was Eli living as a girl? He/she never let Hakan touch him/her anyway, so what difference did it make?

Virginia made it seem like you could retain control of yourself (for a time anyway) and fight off the "being" or "second heart" developing inside. Two forces fighting for the use of a body. Eli seemed to second that, since she could "act" like a normal girl at times - and then turn into a vampire (with claws and all) at others. Sometimes she attacked people and drank their blood until they died. If she was interrupted, they "lived" to become vampires themselves. Ok. Got that. But then why was she able to drink from Tommy, not kill him AND not infect him?

The tub of blood. Why? If Eli had a tub full of blood, why on earth did he/she have to kill for it? Why did he/she look sick most of the book? Why did Hakan have to go get her blood? It just didn't make sense.

The castration of Elias. What? Seriously. I read that whole scene a couple of times trying to figure out what was going on. Who cut his penis off, and more importantly, why? What was the significance of the way it was cut off? Was his mother there? What did she have in the bowl down at the water? Is that when Elias was changed into a vampire? What happened to his/her mother?

How to kill a vampire. Well, apparently, all you have to do is walk into the sun. Done. You are dead. That's is how Virginia killed herself. So why all the drama with the other vampires? Hakan spends most of the book trying to kill himself one way or another - first as a human and then as a vampire. Why didn't he just walk into the sunlight? As far as driving a stake through a vampire's "heart", I don't recall anyone ever saying that it had to be a wooden stake. I do know that Tommy spent A LONG TIME beating Hakan with a medal trophy in the face and chest and Hakan still survived.

So, whenever Eli kisses Oskar, Oskar "sees" a part of Eli's history - as Eli himself. Ok. Oskar is sick and tired of being bullied by his peers. Ok. Eli "loves" Oskar. Ok. Oskar practically burns down a school and NO ONE even questions him about it. Ok. Oskar, who TELLS Eli that he DOES NOT want to be turned into a vampire and live like Eli, is rescued by Eli at the end and leaves his family to live happily ever after with Eli. NOT!

I don't mind dark, twisted stories. I DO mind stories that don't make sense though. Too many inconsistencies and too many "WHAT?" moments. All said and done, I am rooting for Tommy!
