The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I  loved this book! I wanted Katniss and Peeta to both live - and I couldn't figure out how that could happen, so obviously I was happy with the decision made late in the game by the Capitol. Very sad about Rue though. This is a book about children killing children though, so how can it not be sad.

Katniss is a great character. She is strong, fast, intelligent - and most importantly, a survivor. I sympathize with her confused feelings re Peeta and Gale. I love them both too! I also like how she challenges the Capitol, but just under the radar. She walks a thin line with them. It is like she is playing a game of chess with them. Great way to move the story along.

I also like Cinna. I was wondering why he asked to be the stylist for the District 12 "contestant" though. I kept thinking that he had an ulterior motive. Maybe he will be an asset to Katniss as the story moves forward?? It's hard to believe that someone would WANT to be a stylist for a child being sent to her death.

Every aspect of this book can be related to our world. The higher Districts (1-4) actually train their children to be skilled at winning the Game every year. I'm sure they take the best and the brightest and start their training at a very young age. Sound familiar? Winning at all costs. On the other hand, it takes us back to a very basic instinct, and the way of life in nature: the survival of the fittest.

It is my understanding that the next two books are definitely more political in nature than this one, which I think IS important for the young adult readers these books were written for. It gets the younger generation thinking......and that is good. It is also a good reminder for "older generations" to fight for what we believe in. Good should always triumph over evil, which unfortunately means good people sacrificing themselves for the betterment of others.

I am guessing that the next two books involve Katniss' fight against the Capitol to abolish the Hunger Games and I am ready for the battle, so bring it on! The romantic in me also wants to see how the Katniss/Gale/Peeta triangle works itself out! :)

Definitely looking forward to the next installment!
